The Ford GT supercar has been given a new lease on life and the first road going versions of the updated GT are rolling off a limited production assembly line in Markham Ontario.

In 2015 Ford announced GT production would continue at the Multimatic Assembly facility in Markham. It was part of a plan to make the GT competitive in racing at Le Mans, and to get a production version to market and delivered to the first buyers by the end of 2016. The team at Ford and Multimatic achieved both, and in the process opened a new chapter in the the Ford GT Legend.

The Ford GT40 was developed when Henry Ford tried to buy Ferrari in the early 1960s. When Ferrari pulled out of negotiations Ford built the GT40 to compete at Lemans.  The GT40 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans four consecutive times, from 1966 to 1969. GT40s finished at Le Mans 1-2-3 in 1966.

The 2017 road going version of the GT has a twin turbo V6 engine that produces 600 horsepower.

The carbon fibre bodied supercar has a price tag of approximately $400,000.

For Ford and the companies suppliers, the GT is an expression of its Fords racing and sports car heritage, and a showcase of its current and future engineering and technological power, especially as it relates to aerodynamic design, the use of lightweight construction materials, and Fords ecoboost engine technology.
